PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is a multiplayer online battle royale game developed and published by Bluehole. Inspired by the 2000 Japanese film Battle Royale, the game features up to 100 players parachuting onto an island looking for weapons and equipment to kill others, avoiding getting killed themselves. The availability of the safe area of the game’s map decreases over time, directing surviving players into tighter areas to force encounters. The team or last player standing wins the round.
In early access on March 23, 2017, the game was released for Microsoft Windows, with a full release on December 20, 2017. The same year, the game was released by Microsoft Studios for the Xbox One through its Xbox Game Preview program and officially released in September 2018. A free-to-play mobile version game for Android and iOS was released in 2018, in addition to a port for the PlayStation 4. Battlegrounds are one of the best-selling and most played video games of all time, selling more than 50 million copies worldwide by June 2018 and with over 400 million players in total, including its free-to-play mobile version.
