Comedies. The majority of us enjoy comedies, and while locating decent comedies can be a difficult job, the reality remains that we all need a fine jolly laugh now and then. I remember some amazing comedy films from my childhood.
Anything involving Don Knotts made me laugh, proving the fact that good humor is ageless. When done effectively, humor is also everlasting. When I saw that the ‘Apple Dumpling Gang’ had been added to Disney Plus, I may have squealed. I could watch Don Knotts on repeat, imbue my younger siblings with his ageless, comedic antics, and enjoy the reason that I did not have to cover their ears.
If you are seeking comedy that lightens your mood as well as leaves you smiling, then do not worry at all, as we have got you covered. I have enlisted some of my favorites, which I hope you will relish as well. While the style of humor varies from film to film, you cannot oppose the fact that sometimes all we require in life is a good chuckle provided by comedic experts over a crazy storyline.
You are probably thinking about all the comedy movies by now that would brighten your day. We understand that seeing your favorite characters randomly chilling in your home is impossible; but, watching them on your TV screens or any streaming site is perfectly acceptable.

The Princess Bride
The film does have some bizarre parts. You might have to be “ready to die” from laughter. It was not supposed to be a literary classic turned film. However, a grandfather telling his grandson the story of the princess bride demonstrates what amazing storytellers grandpas can be.
It is a mash-up of romance, magic, fantasy, and an inordinate amount of comedy delivered with a straight face and solemnity.
- Father of the Bride
Steve Martin appears on screen as an apprehensive, overwhelmed father who is not at all prepared to watch his daughter walk down the aisle. The film is both humorous as well as heartbreaking, with Steve Martin delivering words and feelings that only he can.
It shows the father-daughter connection, the stress of wedding planning, the extremes to which some go to create a spectacular wedding, and all the mistakes that might ensue. Prepare to laugh heartily at touching scenes and we assure you that you would leave feeling satisfied.
- The Muppet Movie
We are going further into the vaults and unearthing an ancient gem that everyone should know about. And this is just the beginning of the Muppet movie empire, which draws on the slapstick, old-time comic style of Laurel and Hardy, as well as Steve Martin’s snarky one-liners and Chris Farley’s wacky, nonsensical humor.
The Muppets’ characters make it difficult not to laugh aloud. You will meet a wild, head-banging drummer, a weirdo, and a loveable teddy bear if you can get through Kermit the frog and Miss Piggy (to name a few). I am guessing most of you are familiar with the Muppets, but if you are not, please say hello. You are going to have a good laugh. Guaranteed.
- The Incredibles
Do not underestimate the impact of a good animated movie! The Incredibles is a Pixar comedy about a retired superhero and his better half, as well as their incredibly brilliant but uninspired children. When a deviant decides to take over the world, retiring becomes impossible.
It is hilarious to watch middle-aged superheroes shove themselves back into super suits and try to reconnect with their younger, more spectacular selves. The humor is clean and family-friendly, and it is impossible to dispute that Pixar brings cartoons to life and makes you forget you are not watching real people.
- Jumanji
The new Jumanji revival has done the classic justice by continuing as well as expanding on its comedic perspective on a frightening game. Jumanji throws its audience into a video game world from which they must escape. They don’t get to keep their actual bodies, instead their cast away into the roles of gaming characters. This allows for many giggles and awkward humorous moments.
Even their deaths are amusing because they only have three lifetimes as characters. If you have even a smidgeon of a sense of humor, you will howl at this. While there is some foul language and some possibly offensive connotations, it is a fun film that will keep you smiling long after the credits have rolled.
- Instant Family
This film is almost impossible to dislike. The wonderful chemistry between Mark as well as Rose combines to create a laugh-out-loud comedy about a married couple navigating the trials and tribulations of foster care.
The honeymoon time makes them feel prepared and capable as foster parents when they bring home three siblings. However, as life progresses, the amusing and heartfelt moments between parents and children become more common.
The humor comes in the form of great one-liners and fantastic dialogue. It is difficult to put this great family comedy on hold, and aside from some mild language, it’s a family film that everyone will enjoy.
Final words
The good news is that quality comedies may still be found. If you’re prepared to look, you can locate ancient Muppet masterpieces from 1979 or more recent Netflix originals. Also, do not overlook some of the other oldies that have successfully marked their presence in the comedy world.
